Rustom: Too priggish for comfort

Rustom

Rustom

You smell a rodent immediately. It’s at the branch of the naval officer fiction Rustom Pavri (Akshay Kumar) ringed against the tricolor hover without end out of sight.

Chief Tinu Suresh Desai reinterprets the (in)famous K.M. Nanavati instance of yore and manufactures a well known paranoid fear around it in the soul of the present uber-patriotic times, advantageously at that.

Akshay Kumar, plays the Nanavati character while Ileana D’ Cruz is Cynthia (the philandering Sylvia from certain living) and Arjun Bajwa plays Vikram Makhija (the philanderer Prem Ahuja).

“Kuchh to hai jo pakad mein nahin aa raha hai,” says the researching cop Vincent Lobo (Pavan Malhotra) sooner or later. Nonetheless, any barely keen watcher would know where things are heading.

Despite the fact that, the film itself consciously tries to overemphasize the amount more there is to this apparently basic, straightforward situation of betrayal, jealousy and vengeance.

Disregard that there is nothing remotely trustworthy or taking part in the thriller.

The film, indeed, feels like a parody of the few murder puzzles and court shows we have seen down the ages.

Also, an inadvertently entertaining one at that. A few minutes in the second half are really extremely valuable, particularly those that are to do with an orange robe and a dubiously held white towel that declines to descend the waist.

In any case, what is all the more disturbing is the exemplary nature ascribed to the killer protagonist – an ethical Kumar, directly down to the self-righteous mustache and straight spine;

at that point the unmistakable blame, lastingly inclined head of Ileana and the discussion of putting the Queen in question in the round of chess, just for an inevitable win.

Add to that the “desh ki raksha/hifazat” angle and the one-two punch of machismo of the Navy man—in the guide of the country and the lady—and it gets far excessively pompous for comfort.

Kumar wrests the ethical high ground, as a man, a spouse and a much enhanced officer. Furthermore, the janta approves.
